I am getting ready to go to a couple of classes to learn more about Surface Texturing Techniques and Cold Connections.

Surface Texturing is a fairly self explanatory term - ways of making textures on a surface - in this case, that surface most likely being a sheet metal such as silver or copper. I look forward to seeing what we'll cover in class, and will post pictures as soon as they are available.

Cold Connections - this term refers to methods of connecting pieces and components without soldering them, and probably includes the use of jump rings, rivets, hinges, and maybe some other things I haven't heard of yet. Again, I will post pics as soon as they are available.

...And be on the lookout for some interesting new pieces in the coming weeks!

Creative Craft Festival November 4 & 5

I am thrilled to announce that I will be offering some of my lovingly handcrafted jewelry and accessories for sale at the Creative Craft Festival in Norman, Oklahoma this weekend, Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5.

This takes place inside the building at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E. Robinson, Norman, OK 73071. (You can click the address to see a google map page of where this is.) Show hours are 4 to 8 on Friday and 9 to 4 on Saturday, so come on out and see me (...and the other 80 or 90 other vendors, too!).

The Cleveland County Fairgrounds has been home to the Creative Craft Festivals for over 20 years. They have 5 shows a year beginning with one in March and ending each year with one in December. These craft shows are filled with a wide variety of hand crafted and market items from various vendors around the region. Parking and admission are always free at every show, with a concession stand run by local county clubs. Sounds like one could make a day of it, so come on out!

Strike interferes with shipments to Canada

Friday, June 17, 2011 – Due to the Canadian Postal Strike, Canada Post has informed the U.S. Postal Service that the suspension of mail delivery to Canadian addresses will last until at least next week.
With this notification, USPS will stop accepting all letters and packages destined to Canada with the exception of Global Express Guaranteed (GXG) Shipments at 11:59 p.m., CST, Saturday, June 18.

Monday, June 20 Update – USPS Info on Canada Post strike: USPS is NOT ACCEPTING mail destined for Canada as of Sat, June 18 with the exception of Global Express Guaranteed (GXG) shipments. The Canadian Government is scheduled to make a decision on back-to-work legislation at some point today (Monday, 6/20). Once Canada Post announces when they will resume operations, the USPS will again accept mail destined to Canada.

I want to tell you what I love about selling on ArtFire - Where to begin?

First of all, it's so easy to sign up with ArtFire and begin selling. I heard about it from another creative friend and looked into it. There's a Basic version (free) and a Pro version (for a small monthly fee). Like many others, I started out with the Basic version, but soon upgraded to the Pro version because it has so many more options behind the scenes.

The Help Center has a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up your ArtFire store. Really, all you have to do is read the black part and follow the uber simple directions!

Help Center also has a 45 Day Guide, which walks you through exactly what to do to make your most successful ArtFire store. It even includes Work Days, since, as a crafter, you have to make some things to list, right? The 45 Day Guide also includes information on blogging your ArtFire Studio, setting up social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and indexing tutorials, and even advice on creating your business cards.

There is a beehive of community on ArtFire - forums of other artisans and crafters, as well as guilds in various disciplines, in addition to the ArtFire staff - plenty of help available!

There are badges called Artifacts for which you can apply if you meet the criteria, and then you can display the artifacts in the artifact section of your profile, if you wish. Right now I'm pulling together what I need to submit to apply for a Certified Handmade Artisan artifact. More information about that as it becomes available.

If you're on Facebook, you can get an ArtFire Kiosk for Facebook!

And look here: When ever you visit an ArtFire Studio, you can see when was the last time the artisan checked in - so part of my daily routine is to go to MyArtFire to Check-In as well as check for orders and add items to my Studio - and you can see, if the artisan has checked in recently, they are more likely to be involved, which means you get better and more personal service.

...And I love the ArtFire Dashboard page. Everything is laid out easy to see, easy to follow. You can even see where referrals to your ArtFire Studio are coming from in the Latest Incoming Referring URLs.

Back from Rio in Motion

I just got back from Rio in Motion in Albuquerque, New Mexico and it was great!

Rio Grande Jewelry Supply typically takes at least portions of this event on the road to some of the jewelry industry trade shows, such as the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show, MJSA's big show in New York, and others. I've actually been to an MJSA show, but I have to tell you, going to a trade show is something like going through those buildings at the State Fair where the vendors come to present their businesses - a lot of exposure, but way too busy of an environment to really get much in depth. Also, I know the Tucson show is huge (like, all over town) and the thought of going to something like that is, quite frankly, intimidating to me. I know many thousands of people attend the Tucson show every time they have one, but the mere thought of it seems overwhelming to me. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd "never" go to one, but in my current mindset, I can't imagine what it would take to get me to go to another huge trade show.

...So I was thrilled when I learned Rio Grande was going to do a Rio In Motion event right there at their home base facility in Albuquerque - I could definitely do that! One location, more focus, less chance of getting lost in a city that's not mine... and Rio totally went above and beyond to make things pleasant, informative, and as easy as possible for the participants. They must have planned it from a perspective of "If we were attending an event like this, how would we like it to go? How would we like to be treated?"

Rio got special rates for their participants at several hotels, Rio provided shuttle service from those hotels to their facility and back, they had a nice assortment of classes (which filled in a hurry!) with excellent instructors, and had tours of the facility and product demonstrations after each day's classes. They also provided snacks and very nice catered gourmet lunch each day. Many members of staff were on hand to meet and greet the participants and they all were so cordial and gracious! They really treated us all like royalty. I got the impression that they were as sincerely happy to have us there as we were to be there.

I learned in the facility tour that Rio Grande actually makes a substantial number of the jewelry findings and finished jewelry pieces that they sell, and we got to see the steps of process from wax impressions being cast and put on trees, investment, removing the pieces from the trees, cleaning the pieces prior to polishing, the different stages of the polishing process, the overstock warehouse, the big, medium, and small parts departments of the warehouse, the Made To Order department (if you need 1/2 ounce of silver wire that's cut from a spool, weighed and packaged in order for you to receive it, that is "made to order"). Rio also has their own CNC and metal shop department, so they are able to make any equipment they need, right there in house. Rio also can do custom imprints on any of the packaging materials they sell, and we got to see that department, too. They use state of the art communications devices to fill orders and maintain inventory.

Rio employs about 300 or so people, and everywhere I saw such a sense of community and team spirit.

Rio is quite green, using great recycling programs and solar energy.

Someone told me once, and I have found it to be true, that "any organization is the length and shadow of the person in charge." The founder, Saul Bell, has gone on to the Big Studio in the Sky now, but several of his descendants are still in evidence at Rio Grande. I am extremely pleased to report that Rio Grande is best of the best - quality, ability, competence, consideration, security, service, efficiency, politeness, good cheer, a sense of community, classiness, clarity, integrity, and more... the list can go on, but I think you get the picture.

I sure hope Rio Grande does more Rio in Motion events in Albuquerque, because I would certainly go back!

In the fall of 2005 I needed a pair of earrings to go with an outfit for a special occasion.I remembered I had an old case of beads, earwires, and other such supplies left over from a time I'd learned how to make a beaded bracelets. I found that old case and made the earrings I needed. While I had the beads out, I adorned a barrette to match, and then made a bracelet and necklace while I was at it. My friends complimented me on these unusual items, especially the barrette.

Not long after that, some of my coworkers decided to put on a holiday craft sale, with a commission percentage to benefit a local food bank. I made up a passel of barrettes to take and, to my surprise and delight, sold every one! In an "Aha!" moment, my new hobby became a sideline business.

I decided to create a website for online sales. On the night of March 12, 2006 I was filling out the application for my new website and came across the question, "What is the name of your store?" Hmmm, business needs a name. I brainstormed, thinking of previous enterprises with which I had been associated and discovered a commonality in that many of them were named after places - Red Brick Studio, True Light Carrot Patch - geographic centers of creativity - and borrowed from my address at the time, 8 Susquehanna, as a name for my new jewelrymaking business, Eight Susquehanna. So it has been, and so it is - EightSusquehanna.

In January 2009 we made the acquaintance of a couple who were looking to move to Cooperstown. Long story short, this couple fell in love with our wonderful house at 8 Susquehanna, just as we had seven years previously. Even though the house was not on the market, the couple expressed an interest in purchasing it and a deal was struck. The sale of the house closed in April of 2009 and we took the opportunity to return to Oklahoma to be nearer to most of our family.

Greetings! As we approach the end of summer, Labor Day is right around the corner, students are returning to school and sturdy men in tool belts and heavy gloves are finishing my new studio.

Overview: Different types of gold chain links

While there are a great deal of different types of gold chain links, here will be covered some of the more common varieties.
* Rope chain: This is, as the name suggests, meant to look like a rope in that the way the links are put together appear to be twisted or plaited. "Diamond-cut" rope chain is made with the outer side of the links having been filed flat, then buffed to a bright finish.
* Cable chain: The classic design where oval links are joined together in a simple single line.
* Box or Venetian box chain: This type of chain is made of links that have first been flattened, then linked together for a sturdier appearance.
* Herringbone chain: More intricately wrought than some chains, this design is made to lie flat against the body. Herringbone is loved for its bright finish.
* Snake chain: Like the herringbone, this is another relatively modern, more involved design than simple link chains in that is a solid round ("snake-like") chain.
* Omega chain: Basically the same design as the snake chain, but it has been slightly flattened into a solid oval. Both the snake and omega are perfect for "slide" pendants.

Great summer bathing suit cover ups

A bathing suit cover up can protect your skin, camouflage areas you'd rather not have on show or create a put together, stylish look to wear to the beach or poolside. There are numerous options when it comes to what to wear over your swimsuit. Some great ideas are listed below.

1. Denim shorts-your humble denim shorts make a great cover up for your swimsuit. They are generally made from cotton so they are breathable and dry quickly. The thicker fabrication makes them particularly good at hiding wet patches if you want to throw them back on over your swimsuit straight after getting out of the water. They are also fairly heavy duty, which can be beneficial if sitting on concrete or rocks.

2. Caftans and cover up tunics-most swimsuit retailers also sell a wide range of semi sheer caftans or tunic tops which cover both your upper body and the top of your lower body. You can buy them in virtually any color, but white is a very classic and versatile option. There are varieties with embroidery or beading if you want something a little bit special that can take you from beach to bar.

3. Button front dresses-dresses that button up the front make for a flexible swimsuit cover up because you can do up as many or as few buttons as desired. Look for cotton, linen or terry toweling fabrics.

Progress Report

We went out to the acreage in Mustang to evaluate the interior of the house and see what needs to be done there before we actually move in, and I have to say that while we knew it would be a big job, it looks to be a bigger job than I thought it would be. Fortunately I am married to Superman (sorry for blowing your cover, Dear), so we have accomplished an amazing amount of work this week. That is a good thing, because there is yet a good ten times that much more to be done!

I said in my last post that I would post pictures, and the picture I am posting with this entry is of the garden. This is in the same location we had the garden before, so even with seven years of overgrowth, it was relatively easy to till.

Okay, I know, it doesn't look like much right now, but wait 'til some of those plants fill out a little bit! I'll post follow-up photos to prove it later on.

Meanwhile, I'm working in the background to keep my Internet businesses EightSusquehanna.com and my eBay Store going until we can get the new studio set up and get me back to work making more lovingly handcrafted jewelry, so stay tuned, kids!

Temporary Digs

We have arrived to Oklahoma.

The house on our acreage in Mustang will be available the week of April 20, so we're trying to keep our hands and minds busy until then.

We have taken temporary lodging in a place called Candlewood Suites, a residential hotel. We expect to be here from one to three months while we whip the A-frame into shape.

We've been out there a few times to look around and I am happy to report that:
* The chicken house is intact and will only require some cleaning up and a little repair.
* Apparently no one ever harvested the garlic we planted the October before we moved to Cooperstown and it has naturalized, so with no effort on our part, we will get to harvest garlic this summer!

A LOT of work will be required to bring the rest of the place up to snuff. We'll know more once we can get inside and see what needs to be done there. I'll take pictures next time we go out there and post one or two.

Moving

In late January we met a lovely couple who were looking to move to Cooperstown. They had a solid list of what they wanted, and were having trouble finding exactly what they were looking for in a house. When they listed their requirements to my husband Steve, he said, "Gee, that sounds like our house."

"Is your house for sale?"

"Oh, no."

"Well, could we take a look at it anyway?"

So they came to our house one weekend just before the middle of February and we showed them around. They fell in love with our house, just like we fell in love with it when we looked at it almost exactly seven years earlier and asked if we would consider selling it to them. Long story short, we quoted them a price and ...

The closing was on Wednesday April 8 and on Thursday the 9th we left Cooperstown with two rented trucks, our van and a trailer, all packed outrageously full of our earthly possessions, on our way back to Oklahoma.

A good thing about our businesses, mine as an artisan with an Internet store, and Steve's as a carpenter, is that these businesses are so portable. I can make jewelry and Steve can "make sawdust" anywhere that we can set up workspace. We look forward to setting up shop on our acreage in Mustang, Oklahoma.

Over the last seven years we have made so many dear friends in Cooperstown, Otsego County, throughout Central New York, and even across the state, both with my jewelry making and Steve's carpentry. We have both been quite active in the community as well and are sad to leave our many New York friends, but be assured, they do have mail service, phones, computers, and even the Internet in Oklahoma, so there is no reason we can't stay in contact!

The Story of Eight Susquehanna

Carpenter Charles Lee Root came to Cooperstown in 1862 to work on a Clark Family property called Fernleigh, located along the banks of the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. He stayed on in Cooperstown and worked on every Clark property until the Lord called him home. His name is inscribed ("C.L. Root") in the cornerstone of the old firehouse on Chestnut Street, which can still be seen, preserved for its historical value, in the vestibule of the newer twentieth century firehouse at the same location. Mr. Root was the carpenter foreman on the Otesaga Hotel in the early 1900's, and built a home for his family with the same excellence in substance, craftsmanship, care and quality at the address of 8 Susquehanna Avenue. The house at 8 Susquehanna was continuously inhabited by Root family descendants until Malcolm Root died at the age of seventy in 2001.

Steve and Vicki Newby were fortunate enough to acquire the house in 2002 and always like to say that the good thing about this house was that they didn't do much to it and the bad thing about this house was that they didn't do much to it. Most of the original hardware was still in use or present on site, as was a great deal of knob and tube/silk-covered electrical wiring - still operative and in use in 2002! Vicki was initially dismayed at the electrician's insistance that all this old wiring be replaced until he explained in terms of safety. ("You're living on Grace that this house hasn't burned right down to the ground with this old wiring!")

The Newbys set about performing tasks of restorative maintenance and renovation to this lovely old home, deeply sensing Mr. Root's spirit and influence in the details.

In the fall of 2005 Vicki needed a pair of earrings to go with an outfit for a special occasion. Remembering she had an old case of beads, earwires, and other such supplies, she located it and made the earrings she needed. While she had the beads out, she adorned a barrette to match and made a bracelet and necklace while she was at it. Her friends complimented her on these unusual items, especially the barrette. Not long after that, some of her coworkers decided to put on a holiday craft sale, with a commission percentage to benefit the Cooperstown Food Bank. Vicki made up a passel of barrettes to take and, to her surprise and delight, sold every one! In an "Aha!" moment, her new hobby became a sideline business.

She decided to create a website for online sales. On the night of March 12, 2006 Vicki was filling out the application for her new website and came across the question, "What is the name of your business?" Hmmm, business needs a name. Vicki brainstormed previous enterprises with which she had been associated and discovered a commonality in that many of them were named after places - Red Brick Studio, True Light Carrot Patch - geographic centers of creativity - and borrowed from her address, 8 Susquehanna, as a name for her new jewelrymaking business, Eight Susquehanna. So it has been, and so it is. EightSusquehanna.

Baking Day and Other Projects

Greetings, All!

Today I packaged and mailed an item I sold online, hung a light fixture, balanced the checkbook and baked a loaf of bread and two dozen cookies. This is what I love about being home more, is I can do more homey things.

I would love to be able to tell you it's been x-amount-of-time since we bought a loaf of commercially prepared bread from the store, but around the time of our holiday travels, both before and after, we did have to revert to store-bought a few times. If we have to get store-bought, we like that "Health Nut" bread or some such equivalent. I can say that in the last, oh, say, year and a half, we have only had to get store-bought bread about ten or twelve times. I love baking our own bread.

A million or so years ago when my kids were toddlers I read Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit and Let's Have Healthy Children by Adele Davis. She had in one of those books a recipe for whole wheat bread plus a particular technique in making it. Been a while since I made actual whole wheat bread, but I do still use the technique I learned from her. The great feature of this technique centers around waking up and feeding the yeast and then activating the gluten so the bread rises nicely and holds together well. I will share with you now my recipe and the preferred technique for baking bread:

Ingredients:
3/4 c hot tap water
1/4 c honey or maple syrup
1 T or 2 packets yeast
2 eggs
2 t salt
3 to 4 cups unbleached flour (I like King Arthur)
1 1/2 T cooking oil

A stand mixer or electric mixer are extremely handy for this technique.
You will also want a timer, such as a one hour wind up kitchen timer.

Turn on the hot water faucet until the water is hot, but not so hot you can't stick your hand in it. You want it to be hot enough to wake the yeast up, but not so hot as to kill it. When the tap is hot, run your 3/4 c water as noted above. Then set the two eggs in another container deep enough that you can cover them with hot water. Set the eggs (in the hot water) aside to warm. We are warming the eggs so they won't chill the yeast mixture, putting it back to sleep.

Into the 3/4 c hot water, pour 1/4 c honey or maple syrup. Being cooler than the water, it will sink to the bottom of the water in the measuring cup, so stir gently to combine and pour into your mixing bowl. Add the yeast to the sweetened water mixture in the mixing bowl and stir gently to dampen. Set your timer for ten minutes.

When the bell rings look at the yeast mixture. It should have frothed up a little. This is good - it means your yeast has awakened, and that it likes the honey or syrup you've fed it.

Add the salt and the now slightly warmed eggs, and two cups of the flour. With regular mixer beaters, or the flat mixing beater if you happen to have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, beat the batter on a medium to low setting (number 2 on the Kitchen Aid) for ten minutes. This makes a batter of a good consistency for stirring in this manner. If you don't happen to have an electric mixer of any sort, make a note to put one on your wish list and beat by hand for ten minutes. All this ten minutes of beating is important as it activates the gluten. By the end of the ten minutes your batter should be starting to get sort of a rubbery texture to it. When you pull the beaters or the spoon out of the dough it should look rubbery-stringy, a little like the texture of silly putty. This is good - this is the gluten - sort of a rubbery textured protein.

At the end of the ten minutes, turn the mixer off and lift the beater(s) out of the batter. Scrape any excess batter from the beaters back into the mixing bowl, and the beaters can then go into the wash sink. If you have a dough hook, put that onto the mixer. If you don't have a dough hook, you may look forward to a one-armed work-out.

Having a cup or two of flour handy, start gently stirring the batter with the dough hook or a very sturdy spoon or spatula. Gradually introduce flour into the mixture, about a quarter cup at a time. Sprinkle in the flour and mix it in. The mixture will get stiffer and stiffer as you go. This is where you will really wish you had at least an electric mixer, and at best a quality stand mixer. Remember: wish list. Keep slowly adding flour and mixing it in until it pulls away from the sides of the mixing bowl. Keep it up, slowly adding flour and mixing it in until the dough forms a ball.

On a flat working surface - wooden cutting board, ordinary (CLEAN!) countertop, or the like - sprinkle a little flour, and tump your dough ball out of the bowl and onto the flour. You'll want to scrape out of the bowl any that might have stuck to the sides, although there shouldn't be much of that if you mixed in enough flour. Set your mixing bowl and the rest of your utensils in the washing sink. We'll get back to them in a minute. Wash your hands with warm water and soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry them with a towl. Remove bracelets, watches, and any rings you don't want to get in the bread dough, or don't want to get bread dough into, and knead your bread. I push down into the dough and away from me with the heels of my hands, give the dough about a quarter turn, then push with the heels of the hands, and so on. Knead - I want to say until it feels right, but that is a vague term if you haven't kneaded bread much before - so knead about a dozen to twenty times.

I will pause here to say that I have heard people say, "Oh, yes, love to knead bread because it's such a great way to release tension, to get aggression out."

I say, "No!" I do not release aggression into my bread, and don't you do it either! When I knead my bread I imagine a column of bright, glittering white light light entering the top of my head, filling my being, and coming down my arms, out my hands, and into the bread. I imagine blessing, blessing and light, flowing into the bread as a gift to anyone who partakes. It gives me goosebumps of ecstacy right now just to think of it. Bless your bread!

Okay, back to making. Once you have kneaded your bread and it feels firm, uniform and cohesive, leave it to rest while you prepare a bowl for rising. I use the bowl I mixed it in. In that case, take a moment to wash the bowl and all the utensils used so far. Dry the inside of the bowl with a towel. Pour the oil in the bottom of the bowl. I specified 1 1/2 T because that is about how much it comes out to be, but really, if you just pour about a half-dollar sized puddle in the bottom of the rising bowl, that is fine. You can eyeball it.

So you have a clean rising bowl with a little oil in the bottom. Take your dough ball, smooth it, dust off any loose flour it might have picked up from the kneading board, and gently plop it, smooth side down, into the rising bowl, and then turn it over so the smooth oily side is up.

Most recipes at this point will say "let rise in a warm place," etc. I make a warm place for my bread to rise, and here's how: Get a large bowl or pan, large enough to set the rising bowl into, and fill it up to about three and a half inches deep with hot water (again, hot tap water is quite sufficient). I don't recommend using the sink for your warm water rising because what if someone should come by and, oh, say, wash their hands, or whatever, and splash soapy hand-washing water into your blessing filled bread dough? Eww! So use a big dish or some sort of pan that you can set by somewhere not-in-the-sink to rise. Once that is all set, cover the rising bowl with what we used to call a "tea towel," which is a kitchen towel made of a smooth, close-weaved fabric like cotton or linen, and take care to keep the towel out of the warming water.

Set your timer for one hour and go do whatever, keeping your ear tuned for the timer.

When the bell rings, come look at your dough. Hopefully it's risen noticeably. Now (Wash your hands first!) you will "punch it down." Again, I say, do this matter-of-factly and with love, without aggression: form a loose fist and press your knuckles into the dough, pressing the air bubbles out. Press, press, press the bubbles out - you'll hear them go "phht! phht!" - and then pick the dough up out of the bowl, form it back into a ball like shape with a smooth side, and set 'er back in the rising bowl. Lay the towel back over the rising bowl, set the timer for another hour, wash the oil off your hands, and go do whatever until the bell rings again.

This time when the bell rings, you'll want to start with getting your loaf pan ready and turn the oven on to 350 F to preheat. If you're using a metal loaf pan you'll want to grease all interior sides with shortening. Not oil, because that will make the bread stick. If you are using a glass pan, grease it, and you'll want to preheat the oven to 325 instead of 350. If you are so furtunate as to have such as one of those Pampered Chef stoneware loaf pans, you may want to give it ever so light a spritzing of non-stick spray if it's not yet seasoned.

Once the loaf pan is ready, punch your dough down in the bowl, and then tump it out onto the kneading board. Knead, this time with attention to popping as many little air bubbles as you can, as well as kneading for smoothness. Knead, press, roll, press, roll, press, roll, and so on, until you have an approximately loaf shaped giant stubby cigar of bread dough. If it has a seam (from pressing and rolling) set the seam side down in the loaf pan. We're going to let her rise thirty more minutes before she goes in the oven (kitchen timer again).

When that thirty minute timer goes off come take a look at the bread. It should have risen noticeably and will rise even more in the oven. Place in the oven, making sure there is enough room for the loaf to rise without getting stuck to the roof of your oven. Set the timer for thrity minutes and pay attention! When that bell rings, come look at the bread. Should be a nice golden brown toasty color. Carefully remove from the oven. You should be able to either turn the pan over and tump the loaf out, or lift it out with hot pads or mitts. If it doesn't want to let go, use a table knife or some other dull slender blade to run around the sides of the pan. Should come right out then. Handle delicately at this point! It's nice if you have a rack to cool it on. Let it set for at least ten-fifteen minutes before you try to cut into it. A knife with a long, sharp-edged blade is best for slicing; they make knives specifically for this purpose.

Man, oh, man, I'm tellin' you, fresh home-baked bread, filled with blessings and love, still warm from the oven, slathered with sweet cream lightly salted dairy butter - one of the great pleasures of life. Nothin' like it.

My plan with this online album was primarily to make the few pics I shot available to the respective families we visited this Christmas. I have sketched through and done cursory light adjustments on the dark images and corrected any red eyes I noticed, so hopefully you can actually see the people in the pics and they won't look too scary, although some are still blurry.

Wrapping up 2008

We have completed the last craft show of our 2008 season (big sigh of relief) and will soon be preparing to take our annual trip through more southern states to visit all the branches of our family tree.

During the rush of show season so many pieces never make it to my website but go straight into the show circuit. Now that show season 2008 is over (for us, anyway) I look forward to getting more inventory on the website, which means more selection and convenient shopping for all my wonderful customers and friends.

If you wish to order merchandise from the website, especially for holiday gifts, you'll definitely want to complete your order by midnight on Monday December 15 so I can get it shipped or delivered before we head South. Don't - I said do not - wait until the last minute!

Gift Certificates, on the other hand, are not under such a deadline as they can be ordered at any time. In the ordering process you specify whether you wish to email the gift certificate directly to your recipient, or print it out on your own printer so that you can personally present it, as, for example, in a card or small package. Handier than a pocket on a shirt! Simply find the yellow "Buy Gift Certificate" button located on each and every page of my website, usually in the bottom left corner - scroll down - and click through to the form. Nothing could be easier, seriously.

November being Thanksgiving month, I am giving a portion of my profits from my November sales to support the Rescue Mission of Utica, Inc. as an expression of gratitude for the ways in which I have been blessed.

I’m originally from Oklahoma City and they have a big Thanksgiving dinner there where anyone can come partake, but I live in central New York now. I am touched by the sincerity of the efforts of Utica Rescue Mission. They help a lot of people in a lot of ways, but that they feed people on Thanksgiving is what prompted me to send them a contribution.

My small contribution isn’t much in the overall scheme of things, but it is 5% of the profits for everything I have sold to date during the month of November. With the grim outlook regarding economic news in America I see people hanging on to their dollars a little more tightly right now, but if I am able to keep making and selling jewelry, I hope to send a bigger check next year.

If you have been blessed in any way I challenge you to make a contribution to an organization near you that feeds people.

Status Post: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When I went for my annual physical in the summer of 2005 I mentioned an ongoing health matter to my doctor, something I considered merely to be an annoying (very annoying) “normal abnormality.” He said, “This shouldn’t be going on this long. Let me send you for further evaluation.” I went, and was shocked to receive a cancer diagnosis.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I had a cancer that gave me a warning (even though I didn’t pay attention to that warning for several months), and we were able to catch it before it was too late. They got it all in surgery and I took a course of radiation just to be sure. Over three years post-op my doctor actually says I can consider myself “cured” of that particular form of cancer although I do go for regular check-ups.

It has been a life changing experience.

Now I make jewelry and sell it on the internet and at craft shows. October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I decided to dedicate a percent of profits from my October’s jewelry sales to support the American Cancer Society as an expression of gratitude for what is literally my new lease on life. We are active in our local Relay for Life here in Central New York, but our local chapter is between seasons right now, so I sent the contribution directly to what I presume to be the main processing office in Oklahoma City, which also happens to be my original home town!

$45.00 isn't much in the overall scheme of things, but it is 5% + of my profits for all the jewelry I sold in October. Economic news in America looks pretty grim right now, but if I am able to keep making and selling jewelry, I hope to send a bigger check next year.

Apple Pies and Buy/Sell

I had an interesting phone call recently from the promoter of a show to which I have applied. This is a show in which all crafts must be handcrafted by the artisan who is personally present at the show representing their own work. We discussed the concepts of "handmade" or "handcrafted" versus manufactured items purchased for resale. This blog entry is an expression of my opinion on the matter.

Carl Sagan said that if you truly wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. I am not remotely interested in trying to take over God’s job - first of all, there are several very good reasons I'm not God, and besides that He's already doing a great job - so I use what is available to me in the making of my particular “apple pies,” my lovingly handcrafted jewelry pieces.

I do purchase components, such as beads, crystals, drilled stones, etc., and findings such as ear wires, posts, clasps, chain, wire, and so on, as well as the wire, sheet metal, or the metal clay material which I make into the beautiful fine silver drops and pendants. All these things are components, parts or materials that I purchase to assemble into jewelry and with very few exceptions (chains and certain special clasps, for example) I do make everything I present for sale. I’m fairly certain I’m not alone in this business of using purchased parts and components for making jewelry– I have observed that most of the jewelry makers admitted to the arts and craft shows I’ve ever been to also use purchased components in the construction of their jewelry pieces.

Among my crafter/artisan friends, we refer to manufactured items purchased for resale as “Buy/Sell” or “BS” (a handy double entendre), for short.

Here's the thing - any fool can order a load of stuff, whether it's made in China or wherever else, and slap a price tag on it. True crafters and artisans, including myself, hate “BS” because it causes the buying public to think less of what we do, and to expect less – less quality, less price, and less credibility since a “reseller” can crank out merchandise that is often unimaginative and/or poorly made, at undercut prices. This undermines the efforts of the crafter or artisan. I'll tell you what - it feels like just one more way that the little mom-and-pop shops are being gobbled up by the big box stores.

I have known people who kept shop where they hired people to assemble their designs. I consider that manufacturing and that’s fine for its purposes, but I do still make all my own pieces, which is why so many of my pieces are ones-of-a-kind. I may make multiples of certain things, and I take custom requests all the time, but my own hand is in every piece. I make each one. Me. I make them. When I'm working on a thing, whether necklace, bracelet, earrings, pendants - whatever it is - I think about the joy it gives me to make this, to handle these materials, and may the ultimate wearer or recipient of this piece enjoy it and be blessed by it. Lovingly Handcrafted, every blessed piece. It's a labor of love and a matter of pride.

Even though I am working hard to upgrade and upscale my look and my market, I still make all my own pieces. I will certainly make an announcement if that should ever change.

Butterflies

Butterflies!

This is one of the butterflies currently offered in my web store, EightSusquehanna.com. With variations in texture and design, no two are exactly alike - truly ones of a kind.

What they do have in common with each other is that they are pierced for hanging and are outfitted with sterling silver (about 21 gauge) jump rings that have a generous 4mm interior diameter through which you may slip your own chain, a satin or velvet cord, or slender leather to wear as a necklace.

Most of the butterflies will be going to shows over the next few months, so if you can make it to a show you can see them in person, touch them, be touched by them, and take one home with you, either for yourself, or as a fabulous gift for someone you love. They are quite beautiful and hang nicely on a 16 to 24 inch chain.

I do plan to use some of these little darlings as focal pieces in beaded works, so be on the lookout for those online or at a show.
